Music to drink wine by!

Clark Smith, California winemaker then became wine consultant believes and is conducting research about how certain types of music can enhance or wreck the experience of wine.

“Red wines need either minor key or they need music that has negative emotion. They don’t like happy music. With expensive reds, don’t play music that makes you giggle. Pinots like sexy music. Cabernets like angry music. It’s very hard to find a piece of music that’s good for both Pinot and Cabernet.”

To me, wine is much more than just the consumption of alcohol. It’s the nectar of wonderful fruits, plus the craft of the winemaker, multiplied by time. It entices of our very senses and let’s us enjoy life in a finer perspective. We did our own experiences of music pairing with various wines, from reds to whites. There were feelings of reminiscent and even anger! (More on the results of this pairing experiment to come later.) How does this happen? I’m not sure, perhaps there’s some magic connection between music and wine. To find out more follow the link below to read the full article:

“One Bourbon, One Scotch, and One Beer” Part.3

Well, you can’t have a Bourbon review and a Scotch review without also having a beer review! This guy Donald’s got just that. I first had one of their beers (Firemans #4 Blonde Ale) when my girlfriend and I were to Austin for vacation, one night we visited an Austin’s local favorite – Shady Grove. Just like the restaurant, I’m proud to say this beer and all their collection of beers are an Austin very own locally brewed and bottled.

“God made Cabernet Sauvignon, whereas the Devil made Pinot Noir.”

That quote came from André Tchelistcheff, America’s most influential winemaker. Born Moscow, fought in the Russian Civil War, nearly died from combat, fled Russia to study oenology, fermentation and microbiology.

As it was quoted from Wine Spectator by James Laube, Kim Marcus and James Suckling,

“I enjoy living,” Tchelistcheff said in a 1986 interview. He lived simply, never trying to build a fortune or own a winery. “I’m not a wealthy man because I never took a chance,” he said. “I was always too European and more willing to stick with my ways rather than take a chance.”

For such humble man, his achievement and contribution to the American wine world is far from ordinary. As for this modest man and his love for the grape, it really takes special care and great attention to transform Pinot Noir from vine to glass as it is no easy fruit to tend to. For that, one goes through hell and back to get the juice.

“I can count the number of great Cabernets I made at Beaulieu only by taking off my socks and shoes, but I can count the number of great Pinot Noirs on one hand with change left over.” – André Tchelistcheff
